But I used to shoot a lot of live events and concerts, and with a DVX100 and a DVC80 to choose from, this camera would always get stuck on the lowest priority shot. It's big, but mostly hollow, so it's almost as light as a Canon ZR series. In sunlight or other bright light, you're fine, but in low light you really know it's a 1-CCD camera. The colors wash out and the picture gets noisy. For a third of the price you could get a consumer level camera (Canon ZR) that'll shoot nearly as well (if not looking as imposing) while you save your pennies for a 3-CCD model. 8 of 9 people found the following review helpful. Nice camera By R. Anastasio Like the other review said, this is a good starter camera. After being out of the video business for about 5 years I decided to by this camera for a wedding I was shooting I got it at a great price. There are a few problems though. It's a little hard to deal with in low light. I have a mounted 150-watt light and it still hard to deal with. If you gain up one it's kind of grainy. But if you are not doing anything that is broadcast quality then this is a good camera. Since I'm doing low budget wedding this is perfect for me. 12 of 16 people found the following review helpful. good pro beginers camera By J. Samuelson This is a great starter camera if you are thinking about getting into videograghy. This camera will give you the pro look, but it seems to be just a consumer level camera in a pro package. quality seems to be very good however, I have only shot a few hrs of tape so far. if you can come up with an extra $1000 seriously consider a different camera that really is on the pro level. Panasonic HDC-SD5 AVCHD 3CCD Flash Memory High Definition Camcorder with 10x Optical Image Stabilization
The HDC-SD5 hi-def camcorder can copy recordings from the SD Memory Card to a DVD disc, maintaining the original full-HD format, or use the included software to burn a full-HD recording from an SD Memory Card to a DVD disc on your PC.Images recorded by conventional HD camcorders have only 1,440 horizontal pixels, while full-HD camcorders have 1,920; that's about 30 percent more recording pixels! The result is a level of detail and resolution that goes beyond anything you've ever experienced before. And because full-HD recordings contain a vast amount of picture information, they look beautiful not only on high-definition TVs, but on standard-definition TVs as well.Camera shake happens. Unsteady hands, shooting while in motion: these factors can reduce the quality of your video. But Panasonic has developed its best-ever built-in Optical Image Stabilization, which compensates for hand-shake and helps keep your videos crisp, steady and blur-free.The HDC-SD5 comes with a world-class Leica Dicomar lens, fashioned specifically for high-definition digital camcorders. The superior craftsmanship of Leica's advanced lens system captures stunning images and colors that look magnificent in HD. Combined with Panasonic's advanced 3CCD system, which uses three separate sensors to capture and process light, you can relive your memories in lifelike detail on your HDTV screen.
Brand: Panasonic Released on: 2009-11-30 Dimensions: 7.00 pounds Display size: 2.7 Record HD video direct to SDHC cards; up to 1 hour on a 4 GB SDHC card 1920 x 1080 full-HD recording; HD Advanced Pure Color Engine Leica Dicomar lens with 10x optical zoom; built-in Advanced O.I.S. 2.7-inch wide-angle LCD monitor; 170-degree viewing angle Intelligent Contrast Control
Manufacturer Description The new HDC-SD5 camcorder employs cutting-edge imaging technology to capture video recordings that are breathtakingly clear and vibrant, especially when viewed on a high-quality, large screen TV. The HDC-SD5 uses the AVCHD format to record full-HD video with 1920 x 1080 pixel resolution. It employs Panasonic's original 3CCD camera system, a professional broadcast feature, which renders vivid, true-to-life colors, outstanding detail and rich gradation. The SD5 also boasts Panasonic’s new Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer), minimizing the effect of hand shake. This technology helps produce crisp, clear images, which is especially important for viewing on large-screen high resolution TVs where image imperfections are easily visible. The HDC-SD5, which records video onto SDHC/SD Memory Cards, debuts as the world's smallest palm-style 3CCD full-HD camcorder. It is even smaller than its predecessor model, HDC-SD1, giving the SD5 superb portability. The SD5 also features a new USB Host function that significantly improves data storage and playback ease. With an optional newly released DVD burner (model VW-BN1), users can copy or play back video recordings in the original AVCHD format to deliver the ultimate high-definition viewing experience on a large-screen TV. Panasonic HDC-SD5 Highlights 1920 x 1080 full-HD recording While conventional HD recordings have 1,440 pixels in the horizontal direction, full-HD recordings have 1,920. And while conventional recordings have a total of around 1.55 million pixels, full-HD recordings have around 2.07 million -- about 30 percent more. In fact, full-HD has the most pixels of any HD format, and thus can render images with unmatched detail and resolution. 10x optical zoom moves you closer to the action 10x optical zoom Distant subjects can be enlarged so they appear to be right up close. This allows dynamic shots of both motion and still pictures. Advanced O.I.S. (Optical Image Stabilizer) The SD5 features Panasonic's new and improved image-stabilization system. The system uses gyro-sensors to detect hand-shake, then shifts a lens and adjusts its optical axis to compensate. Called Advanced O.I.S., this system performs the compensation operation eight times more frequently than Panasonic’s previous system, thus achieving even greater precision and accuracy. Because this is an optical system, there is virtually no loss of quality, resulting in images that are captured in all their original beauty. Advanced O.I.S. reduces the subtle blurring that can be caused by even a slight bit of hand-shake, and it is truly necessary in an age of large-screen, high-resolution TVs, when every image imperfection is easily visible. A 3CCD system results in superior color reproduction 3CCD camera system Panasonic has downsized its professional 3CCD camera system for use in consumer models. In a 3CCD camera system, the light received through the lens is split into its three primary color components (red, green and blue), and the signal from each is processed by one of the three CCDs. This system, in which three separate CCDs capture and process the light information received through the lens, helps reproduce high-resolution HD images with magnificent color. The multi-coated lens (right) delivers clear images with no color bleeding Leica Dicomar lens Photographers around the world know Leica Camera AG as a maker of superb cameras and lenses. This company's advanced optical technology has been fused with Panasonic's leading-edge digital technology to create the Leica Dicomar lens. The Leica Dicomar lens provided in the HDC-SD5 features 12 lens elements in eight groups, and uses low-dispersion optical glass to reduce the blurring of color. A special multi-coating process is applied to the 14 lens element surfaces to minimize chromatic aberration, so images are crisp, clear, and free of flare and ghosting. Pre-Rec function With many camcorders it is easy to miss capturing a critical moment, such as a goal being scored. The Pre-Rec function eliminates this problem. When this feature is activated, the camcorder continuously records three seconds of images onto an internal buffer memory. Then when the record button is pressed, the three seconds immediately prior are added at the beginning of the clip recorded. Intelligent Contrast Control This intelligent new function continually measures the ambient light intensity and adjusts the contrast as it changes. Providing control over a wider range of lighting conditions than previous functions, Intelligent Contrast Control helps prevent a washed-out look in bright parts of an image and black-outs in shadowy areas. Images are captured with natural nuances, contrast and depth, even when shooting toward the light source. HD Advanced Pure Color Engine To match the newly developed full-HD CCD, Panasonic has further enhanced its acclaimed Advanced Pure Color Engine image processor. A new noise-reduction circuit combines with the new Intelligent Contrast Control circuit to boost image quality while reducing power consumption. Offering superior images and longer battery life, the HD Advanced Pure Color Engine takes camcorder performance to new heights. Wide-angle LCD monitor The SD5 incorporates a new LCD that has 300,000 pixels and a wide 170-degree viewing angle both vertically and horizontally. The wider viewing angle is a big advantage in high-angle and low-angle shooting. It's a big benefit in playback too, allowing several people at the same time to enjoy viewing a video clip. Power LCD Extra The brightness of the LCD can be set to either of two levels to match the ambient light condition. At the brighter setting, the LCD provides clear, easy viewing even when shooting outdoors on a sunny day. Playback EZ Sync The SX5 is compatible with Panasonic's EZ Sync. Simply connect it to a Panasonic TV via an HDMI cable and follow on-screen prompts to operate the camcorder using the TV remote control. This adds extra ease and convenience to the fun of viewing the full-HD video. Focus Assist in action Focus Assist This function enlarges the center of the image, making it easier for you to get a clear, sharp shot when focusing manually. Direct viewing with SD card slot The SDHC/SD memory card can simply be taken from the SD5 and slipped into the card slot of select Panasonic plasma TVs to view full-HD images recorded in the AVCHD format. Images saved as JPEGs can be viewed using the SD memory card slot in select Panasonic models as well. Archiving with USB Host function Simply connect the SD5 via USB cable to Panasonic’s optional DVD burner VW-BN1 (released at the same time) and press a single button to copy recorded video clips from an SDHC/SD Memory Card to a DVD disc in the original AVCHD format. The copied DVD can be played by the DVD burner, so it is possible to view exciting, large-screen images in HD quality by simply connecting the DVD burner to the HDC-SD5 and the SD5 to an HDTV. Editing Software "HD Writer 2.0" Full-HD video clips can be easily edited with the software provided or copied onto a DVD disc. The video data can be saved in either the AVCHD or DVD-VIDEO format, depending on how it will be played back. Recordings saved in the full-HD AVCHD format are suitable for playback with a Blu-ray Disc player, while DVD-Video (standard definition) recordings can be played back with a DVD player.

It fits in your hand as if it were a half full 12 oz. can of soda. It's very light, but the fortunately the image stabilization makes it shoot like it was a heavier camera. I ran into an issue with iMovie '07 (part of Apple's iLife '08) that caused the screen to stretch wider, making people look fat. This will likely be resolved soon by Apple, and for now I've taken to using the 1440 X 1080 resolution which imports just fine. I've also fitted a 37mm mount size aftermarket wide angle lens which really helps for shooting indoors. Some have complained that the video is a bit more grainy while indoors and in darker conditions than the HD1, but I can't complain. So far, the battery life seems to run an hour and 10 minutes, which is better than the 55 minutes it's rated for. This camera does not include an SD card, so you'll want to pick up a 4GB (40 minutes) or 8 GB (80 minutes) card I got the class 6 version of those SDHC cards for a faster transfer. I think I might stick with the 4 GB size in the future so I can easily burn the files to a blank DVD which holds 4.7 GB. Also, make sure you have a card reader that supports SDHC. It also doesn't include an HDMI cable, so pick one of those up if you have a TV capable of HDMI. Belkin makes the least expensive cable at $20. And finally, if you're a Mac user, you should know that only the Intel Macs (that have been out since January of '06) support the AVCHD editing. Some have complained about the low light grain that this camera tends to have. I've noticed it as well, and apparently the HD1 is slightly better indoors. But this wasn't a huge issue for me. The only thing that would make this camera perfect for me would be an external mic input. 25 of 25 people found the following review helpful. Best that's out there right now By A. Johnston This is the first camcorder I have bought in a while. My last one was a Canon MiniDV that did progressive frame shooting. I've been researching for months on and off and following the progress of HD camcorders. I personally love this camera, there are only a few, mute things about this camera that I miss. Pros: - It's small and very light weight; almost too light. I *almost* found myself wishing it were a little heavier to make it easier to hold the camera steady. But it's great like it is. - The picture quality is great. Having had a progressive scan camcorder before, I notice the interlacing, but it's no where near as bad as the MiniDV camcorder I had before that did interlacing. There is a slight grain to the picture in low light, but this is to be expected, and after reading several reviews about how "horrible" the low light was, I thought it was great. It wasn't near as bad for me as people were making it out to be, but that's a subjective thing (I viewed this on both a 720 and 1080 screen) - Audio is good, it doesn't make me too loud (since I'm holding the camera and the mic is right next to me) and I can clearly hear thing that are farther out. - Battery life is great. I can easily get over an hour, and it seems to indicate it can do more than that, though I haven't put that to the test yet and the manual says I can only get a maximum of 1 hour and 25 minutes (55 minutes actual). So we'll see. - I kind of like that the battery and SD card are tucked away underneath. I don't agree with a previous review that the door and hinge are made cheaply. It seems standard to me. - I love the SD card recording media. No more tapes! No more mini-DVDs! No more having to hook up your hard drive based camcorder to the computer to copy files! Cons: - I imagine I'll miss that there's no external mic input. But I bought this anticipating to use it as a point-and-shoot camcorder I'm just starting a family and wanted to capture everything, and this will do it. I don't plan on making any little.

Be careful with compatibility By Rafael Chinchilla All Canon HDV cameras has an important issue: if you record in 24F or 30F modes, the tapes can only be played back in the camera itself. Canon records those signals in a proprietary mode that is not HDV compliant. YOU CANNOT PLAYBACK THE TAPES IN ANY DECK OR CAMERA other than Canon. See all 1 customer reviews...

The card is an amazing value for all you're getting, so I placed my order 6/4/07. Opted for standard shipping and it arrived 2 days later - can't beat that. When I hooked it up, the USB ports worked perfectly, but I couldn't recognize the firewire ports. I spent a lot of time troubleshooting and trying to install drivers even though I thought I wouldn't need updated drivers on my XP system. Finally, I saw the one review on here by FlyersFan about how the firewire cable shipped with the card didn't work. I've never had a problem with using cheap, no-name cables before, so I gave it a 1% chance of working, but I went to Staples and got a Belkin firewire cable. BINGO!!! It worked. Afterwards, I checked both ports and trying wiggling around the cheapo cable shipped with the card, and in every scenario, the cheapo cable didn't work and the Belkin did Thank you so much FlyersFan for posting about your need to get a new cable! Many people have had no complaints with the card and cable, but clearly a significant number of the cables shipped out with this card are fatally defective. I give the package 3 stars because I really like having 2 firewire ports and 3 USB 2.0 ports on one PCI card for less than $20. But please be aware that you may have to run out and buy a separate firewire cable. 15 of 18 people found the following review helpful. Great By Ospreyguy This is a great combo 2.0 USB port and firewire. It serves the purpose of providing 3 usb ports and 2 firewire ports and it came with a firewire cable! This is a great value and I would definately recomment it. 6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Works very well By S. Kelly I have to admit that I was a bit skeptical about the almost no-name whitebox hardware I was pleasantly surprised with how well these worked on several computers, both as USB2 and FireWire. To reinstall the software, "restore to an earlier date" has been used to restore your computer to an earlier date than the date on which the software was originally installed. Detailed instructions, with the group, and when I became acquainted with some of its many functions, I found it very comfortable to use. The clarity of movies recorded on DVDs and photos on the SD card is of higher quality. Both are stored on DVD movies and photos stored on the SD card can be delivered to the device by connecting the camcorder to the TV via the cable to the camera (I found that the DVD can be completed in the first) be considered. The software comes with the camcorder advertised to appear (designed especially for "vista") that do not want to edit movies, download pictures to my computer. I contacted Panasonic about the problem twice already, but technicians were unable to help me install the software. I suggested that the software is faulty and asked for another disc, but had no further response from Panasonic since late May 2008. I hope I can get the software working on my "Windows Vista". This camcorder can record video on SD cards. Go to Panasonic's website and download the manual to see for yourself. Here is a quote from p. 26 of the manual: "Can not moving pictures recorded on an SD card with this device." Apparently only still images can be recorded on SD card with this camcorder. This despite the fact that SD cards are now up to 8GB, far exceeding the capacity of a DVD. December 11 people found this review helpful. Later, you can choose which photo is best for printing or storing. To deliver superior video and photo quality, the Optura 300 uses a powerful 2.0 Megapixel CCD. Combined with Genuine Canon Optics and Canon's Optical Image Stabilizer, the camcorder captures images with outstanding clarity. Genuine Canon Optics: 10X Optical Zoom/200X Digital Zoom Canon Genuine Optics are unparalleled in the industry. The same Canon experience and expertise that goes into precision lenses for 35mm and broadcast TV cameras goes into every camcorder lens we manufacture. At Canon, we never compromise. The result is a lens with superb definition and exceptional contrast. The powerful 10X optical zoom lets you capture your subject with razor-sharp detail even from a distance. The powerful 200X digital zoom takes you even closer, revealing details too small to see with the naked eye. The 10X optical zoom gives you the same range of focal lengths as a 48.9-489 mm lens on a 35 mm still camera. Add an optional Wide Converter WD-H30.5 (Item Code: 9065A001) and you get the same wide view you'd get with a 34.2 mm lens on a 35 mm still camera. Add the Tele Converter TL-H30.5 (Item Code: 9064A001) and you have the same magnification power of a 929 mm telephoto lens on a 35 mm still camera. And, that's not the end of the Optura 300's optical versatility. When capturing digital photos to the memory card, the zoom ratio remains 10X zoom, the equivalent of a 38.3 - 383 mm lens on a 35mm photo camera. Image Stabilizer Don't miss a shot -- even if you're shooting hand-held, at full telephoto, or while you're on the move. Canon's superb Image Stabilization system compensates for camcorder shake instantly, making your videos look steady and natural. Unlike other brands, Canon's Image Stabilization is effective even while panning and zooming. DIGIC DV DIGIC DV is a system for achieving superior video and photographic quality images. Canon's expertise in imaging and electronics is flawlessly blended together, resulting in outstanding performance. It offers substantial benefits in color reproduction. DIGIC DV makes it possible to achieve accurate color for both video and digital photos. Since video and photos have different color requirements, DIGIC DV utilizes two different color techniques to maximize video quality on a TV and still image quality for print or computer display. Advanced Photo Features To fully complement the camcorder's superior video quality, it offers features to expand your photographic horizons. Multi-image Screen You can divide your screen into four, nine or sixteen pictures with the Image Capture function. With the Simultaneous Photo Record feature, you can record high quality video to a Mini DV tape and e-mail ready (640 x 480) digital photos to a memory card at the same time. With the Optura Xi's Selectable AF Frames, you can choose one of three different Auto Focus points to automatically put the subject you want into sharp focus. Taking off-center subjects can add more impact and a new dimension to your photographs. Continuous Shooting Function: All it takes is a single press of a button, and your camera records 30 VGA (640 x 480) frames at a rate of 3 frames per second, or 10 SXGA (1280 X 960) frames at 2 frames per second. Built-in Flash Stitch Assist displays the previous photo on the right half of the LCD screen and a live image on the left. Just line things up and shoot. Repeat this process as many times as you like. You don't have to match things perfectly, because the included Canon PhotoStitch software lines up and pieces the individual images together into a seamless, magnificent photographic vista. Faders and Special Effects The Elura camcorders come complete with a wide selection of faders and special effects that can add visual appeal and greater imaging variety. Choose from Fade Trigger, Wipe, Corner, Jump, Flip, Puzzle, Zigzag, Beam and Tide. For a more creative look, you can switch on the following digital effects during recording or playback: Art, Black & White, Sepia, Mosaic, Ball, Cube, Wave, Color Mask or Mirror.

You will certainly want a replacement part buy battery, add a little more $ $ your-budget Optura 300 camcorder is a solid, if you have enough light with the hook photos with 2 megapixel but I think you can do better. . if you want an ultra-compact matchbox style camcorder, you need 'd better with Sony PC-105. or you can use the Panasonic GS-70 and move 3CCD video performance. In both cases you end up with a video camera with similar features as Optura 300 (except 2MP even capacity) and a couple hundred dollars left for more electronic toys! Good DV, MPEG digital but at a discount from Regil MiniDVOkay if you want a compact (palm sized) DV camcorder with excellent video, this is a good product for you.The DV recording has many advanced settings that can be accessed by change via the Configuration menu. The default configuration is ideal for recording automatically, without knowing what to create, and how to set up. Easy to use MiniDV tape drive loads icon back, but not fall unless you try to let it out.The resolution / image is very strong, and you get the accessories needed to display video on TV in high quality: Audio / Video and S-VIDEO cables.M MPEG4 - really ASF (Advanced Systems Format Microsoft) So I was disappointed with thisPerhaps video can not be written to the card fast enough to provide a higher resolution, so the resolution is half the size of what is recorded on MiniDV. And if you're playing on TV, it is only shown in half size (half the size of the area than normal television (and MiniDV tapes) read). However, this was not the greatest.
